New Dialysis Center in Spain Continues Baxter Mission to Save and Sustain Lives

Currently, there are nearly two million patients worldwide with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) receiving HD*. As a renal therapy leader, Baxter recently is providing critical access to kidney dialysis through its new Renal Therapy Services (RTS) Dialysis Center Murcia VII in Murcia, Spain.

The center is the result of a collaboration between Baxter and the Murcia Health Service and will focus on customizing treatment for each patient and implementing the latest available technology. While the center currently treats about 130 patients and performs approximately 20,000 treatments a year, the clinic has the capacity to nearly double the number of patients and treatments without any disruption to patient service.

With this modernized facility, we have the opportunity to provide treatment to renal dialysis patients with the most advanced technology. By closely collaborating with the local hospital, Baxter is now able to help improve the quality of life for patients and significantly contribute to the overall sustainability of the health system.

The dialysis center uses new hemodialysis monitors allowing customized therapy specifically based on patients’ needs and provides easier tracking of patients’ progress.

All assistive devices and monitors are connected through the center’s computer system, which is used by health professionals to more easily manage clinical information. Furthermore, the system is integrated with the public referral hospital, so nephrologists can keep track of their patients’ health in real time with their up to date clinical status and account for the products used in each hemodialysis session.

Additionally, the facility itself incorporated tangible measures in construction with regard to environmental responsibility. As a fundamental part of the dialysis center in enhancing functionality, two water treatment plants and two complete pre-treatment systems help ensure a seamless operation that minimizes unforeseen interruptions. In an effort to build a sustainable environment, the water treatment plants do not use any chemicals for disinfection and are powered through the use of solar panels.

Ensuring patient comfort is essential during treatment, so Baxter equipped the facility with comfortable beds with TVs, internet access and individual lockers for patients. The center also has a training room where health professionals can learn the latest techniques for dialysis treatment.
